Smartboard Best Practices

What is a Smartboard and what is so good about it?

A Smartboard is one brand of Interactive White Boards (IWB).  When connected to a computer an IWBs becomes a giant touchscreen. Whatever one can do at a computer screen, one can do at an interactive whiteboard.   Think of it as a giant computer screen and the user is the mouse!   SmartBoards come wth Notebook software which allows users to create mulitmedia lessons. Teachers (or students) can add to material on the whiteboard with notes and drawings, and  save those files onto the computer.

RESEARCH HAS SHOWN THE VALUE OF SMARTBOARDS

Smartboards are fun, interactive and engaging.  Is there a scientific basis for using them?  The answer is yes!  Here is what somw of the research says:

  • IWBs increase teaching time by allowing

teachers to present web-based and

other resources more efficiently

more opportunities for interaction

and discussion in the classroom

  • different learning styles can be

accommodated as teachers can call on

a variety of resources to suit particular

needs

  • students do not have to use a

keyboard to engage with the

technology,increasing access for

younger children and students with

disabilities

Products That Work Well on a Smartboard

Prek- Secondary Math

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/classroom/

Grade Levels- K-college level

This site touts itself as "the web's most extensive mathematical resource, provided as a free service to the world's mathematics and internet communities as part of a commitment to education and educational outreach by Wolfram Research, makers of Mathematica"  It has a vast amount of math resources such as interactive demonstrations, animated gifs, glosssaries and webmathematica examples that were created with the Mathmetica software. Try going to this page and look on the left sidebar to find "Interactive Entries" to find demonstrations that work well on a Smartboard.  Anyone may contribute a gif or demonstration, or improve on one that is already so there is a wiki sort of feel to the site. There are 4500 more interactive math demonstrations if the free mathmetica player is downloaded.

The site is very large, and I found it difficult to find my way back to interesting pages, so I included the links to parts of the site.

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/classroom/ has full courses on topics such as Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry, Statistics /Probability, and Number and Operations.

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/topics/AnimatedGIFs.html  - contains hundreds of animated gif images that demonstrate topics such as a visualization of the Perpendicular Bisector Theorem.  Some gifs can be manipulated.  No extra software needs to be downloaded to use these.

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/topics/LiveGraphics3DApplets.html contains hundreds of animated images that demonstrate topics such as a mobius strip, and most can be manipulated. The supporting formulas and explanations are given. No extra software needs to be downloaded to use these.

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/topics/InteractiveDemonstrations.html -these hundreds of demonstrations require downloading the Mathmetica player, but they are worth the trouble as the demonstrations become completely interactive.  For example there is an parabola demonstration that shows how to plot and center a parabola with integer coefficients.

http://demonstrations.wolfram.com/education.html?edutag=Elementary+School+K-2+Mathematics&limit=20 had elementary level demonstrations that would look great on a smartboard.

http://mathworld.wolfram.com/topics/LiveGraphics3DApplets.html  there are science demonstrations as well

Standards This site has it all.  A student could achieve conceptual understanding

procedural fluency, and problem solving in all content areas if they had Mathmetica software and spent enough time on this site.
